Does Democracy Mean Islam in Arab Nations?

Before we go jumping for joy over last weekend's coup in Tunisia, perhaps we ought to consider the likely outcome of democratic elections in that country and in others in North Africa and across the Arab and Muslim worlds.

The announcement that Rachid Ghannouchi, Tunisia’s leading Islamist agitator, is to return home from exile in (where else?) London certainly should raise alarm bells in some quarters. Ghannouchi fled into exile after the Tunisians claimed he was linked to plots to blow up tourist hotels in Tunisia – claims, it should be said, Ghannouchi has always denied. But his links to militant Islamist groups throughout North Africa, such as the Sudanese government which is currently the subject of war crimes charges at the Hague, are well-document and give you some idea of which way Tunisia post-Ben Ali could go if the Tunisians do not take care.

And it is a pattern that could be replicated throughout the Maghreb. In Libya Islamist militants pose the most serious threat to the Gaddafi clan’s survival, while in Egypt the Muslim Brotherhood have made no secret of their desire to establish an Islamic theocracy to replace the current secular regime. It was not so long ago that Muslim militants in Algeria were busily blowing up the Paris metro.

In the war against Islamist terror North Africa is already an area that causes Western intelligence agencies serious concern. And the threat to Western interests would rise considerably if Islamist regimes replace the secular dynasties that have pursued pro-Western policies, but in doing so have woefully failed their people.

I'm not sure what the answer is, but it's clearly not business as usual.

Jawhar: The Anti-Sharia Crowd

Sabria Jawhar, Huffington Post
Her further extolling of the sharia is downright insulting to free peoples everywhere. Apparently for this slave woman

.....the more sensational aspects of Sharia: stoning, amputations, lashings and taqiyya. Taqiyya, according to Western extremists, means that Muslims can lie with impunity to hide their true agenda of global domination. I must admit that this is a clever tactic because anyone believing in this nonsense can conveniently disregard as a lie any Muslim argument that is contrary the western extremist position. Interestingly, the Robert Spencers of the world insist we denounce terrorism and renounce Sharia. Yet their position is that all Muslims are liars, so what's the point of making these futile arguments?

[...]

... the report can't quite explain why stonings are so rare and the streets of Saudi Arabia and Iran are not filled with one-armed thieves.

Apparently there aren't enough stonings, amputations, lashings, etc., to warrant concern. How many are enough, Sabria?

As for Sabria's jackboot stomping, the niqab doth protest too much. Clearly the attacks on free speech (hate speech, aka islamophobia), sharia financing, mosqueing of the public square, the workplace, and the public school is all incremental sharia, delegitimizing Israel, rampant anti-semitism ....drip, drip, drip.

Jawhar then complains that a recent study of Sharia's spread in America didn't include Islamic scholars. Maybe the organizers of the study didn't want it overwhelmed with fog and detours and diversions from the main point. Then she continues:

These self-proclaimed experts ignore the principles of Sharia that make Islamic values compatible with democratic societies. Indeed, the principles of Sharia are also found in the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights and predate these documents by more than a millennium. These Sharia principles ensure the freedom of religion, the preservation of human life and family, the guarantee of an education and the pursuit of economic security and justice through commerce.

Freedom of religion for non-Muslims in the Islamic state only if they know their place and accept second-class status. Preservation of human life unless you're deemed a kafir harbi, an infidel at war with Islam. Preservation of the family, including polygamous arrangements in which women are essentially commodities.

Castro favors more Democracy and Private Sector

Two transformative events have taken place with nare a whimper. But their significance is a gamechanger and a kick in the head to Obama and his policies of destruction. No to communism and yes to Israel.

Castro is breaking with communism and denouncing Iran's anti-Israel, anti-semitic genocidal invective.

Dateline--Havana, Cuba

CUBA TO WIPE OUT 500,000 STATE JOBS!

That's right, the last bastion of Soviet-Style socialism is going to encourage private development. Castro suggested during a nationally televised address that as many as one in five government workers may be redundant. The government is going to increase private-sector job opportunities.

Castro has long complained Cubans expect too much from government, which pays average monthly salaries of just $20 but also provides free education and health care and heavily subsidized housing, transportation and basic food. State businesses have been forced to carry many people who do almost nothing.

"Our state cannot and should not continue supporting businesses, production entities and services with inflated payrolls, and losses that hurt our economy are ultimately counterproductive, creating bad habits and distorting worker conduct," the union said.

Many workers were complaining the state was not doing enough to find them new jobs.

Even Cuba realizes socialism is a loser, but morons in this country keep trudging down the path to the "promiseland" I wonder how long we will have to wallow in the mistakes of the Obama-ites before we come to the realization the Cubans are at? Tenor Man

Dr. Martin Luther King on Israel, Security and Zionism.

On March 25, 1968, less than two weeks before his tragic death, he spoke out with clarity and directness stating, “peace for Israel means security, and we must stand with all our might to protect its right to exist, its territorial integrity. I see Israel as one of the great outposts of democracy in the world, and a marvelous example of what can be done, how desert land can be transformed into an oasis of brotherhood and democracy. Peace for Israel means security and that security must be a reality.”
[...]
“I solemnly pledge to do my utmost to uphold the fair name of the Jews-because bigotry in any form is an affront to us all.”

During an appearance at Harvard University shortly before his death, a student stood up and asked King to address himself to the issue of Zionism. The question was clearly hostile. King responded, “When people criticize Zionists they mean Jews, you are talking anti-Semitism.”

Many Foreign Pundits Play Loose with the Facts

During my lifetime I have witnessed the decline of the US Republic into a corporate communist welfare/warfare state. The USA has conducted several preemptive wars excused by her declaration she is bringing "democracy" to various have-not nations. She implies the 7.2 millions Asians she has killed in the process are better off dead.
Similarly, the US citizen has no other choice but to follow the dictates of the military/industrial complex against his better interests. He has the chutzpah to assume only he has the proper moral outlook to judge the conduct of other nations.
Somehow, a number of self-styled experts insist they qualify to discuss "Zionism & State Terrorism."
I live 22 miles east of Egypt within the range of Iran-supplied missiles. Humbly, I ask the pundits to spend a little time conversing with ordinary folks in the region before they pontificate about policy.

Every Democracy Makes Choices

The people voted for officials who reflect their values and interests. It looks like the USA will be in Afghanistan a few more years. Our military and CIA fight the Taliban for control of the lucrative heroin trade.
Our leaders have decided to forgo green jobs, proper health care, clean energy, decent schools and rebuilding the infrastructure.
If the population is upset by this state of affairs, they can buy guns and march on Washington. The Tea Baggers do this regularly. They get what they want because they care about their issues.
At West Point a few lonely souls protested the President's obscene policy. Where were the other 320 millions?
In the 1960's much smaller crowds threw the godless Democratic Party out of town tarred and feathered in disgrace.
Dr. Martin Luther King taught us the white power structure was unwilling to give up anything to us. We had to take it.

You Can Rig an Election but not an Erection

Zimbabwe: You Can Rig an Election but not an Erection

Posted by Ndesanjo Macha, Global Voices

In countries such as Zimbabwe where media freedom is extremely restricted, new technologies have become powerful tools for political campaigning, communication, advocacy and mobilisation.

Since Robert Mugabe turned the country into a dictatorship, bloggers and civic organisations have resorted to using new tools and applications such as blogs, Flickr, Facebook, SMS, YouTube and mashups to fight for democracy, media freedom and good governance.

SMS
If you are in Zimbabwe and your phone rings, you might be receiving news headline from SW Radio, election update from Kubatana.net or a political joke about Robert Mugabe. Widespread mobile phone access in Africa has made SMS a powerful and useful tool for activists.

Zimbabweans are using SMS to send each other political jokes. Comrade Fatso writes about this particular use of SMS:

Anyone know someone with a truck? There's a guy wanting to move all his stuff from State House to Zvimba. The jokes spread as text messages refer to our aged dictator relocating to his rural home. People really do believe this is a general election - because our generals decide who gets elected. Another joke walking the streets of Harare is that the only difference between an election and an erection is that you can't rig the latter.

The UK-based SW Radio uses SMS to send news headlines to mobile phones:

We now have an SMS news headline service sent to mobile phones.
If you have a friend or relative in Zimbabwe who would like to receive this service please email their mobile phone number to: talk@swradioafrica.com
